Treatment, Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Programs:
The Treatment and Rehabilitation program is our second most important project. While going out into the community, we try to find people that have serious addiction problems and encourage them to enter into treatment. We show them the door to an addiction-free life. Those that are committed, succeed and have a better life with our assistance.
- Treatment and rehabilitation
Treatment is the first step in assisting an addict to stay sober. Since we don’t have enough capabilities and legal permits to rehabilitate a substance abuser on our own, we work to get users admitted to rehabilitation centers in both Delhi and Dheradun. Due to limited space, users are screened with the intent to only help those that show great promise to succeed.
The entire expenditure for treatment is being paid through Kunphen. Fifty percent of the total cost of each user’s rehab is being donated by the Tibetan Government in Exile’s Department of Health. The cost for each user’s treatment varies according to the severity of the addiction and the participant’s health. Through our rehabilitation program we help more than 20 addicts each year.
- After-care and Social Reintegration
This is our second step in assisting a drug addict or user with recovery. After-care is a unique program and it holds a very important place in our efforts to ensure users recover successfully and completely. After-care and reintegration are the most difficult and challenging part out of all of our programs.
The After-care program is designed to assess and evaluate whether addicts, that have completed the rehabilitation program are clean, confident and ready to go back to their normal life with their family and in society. We have rented a house for this program and provide free accommodation, food and other things needed to prepare our clients to join society with renewed hope and vigor. Our main goal is to build confidence and teach our clients to meet life challenges with a positive frame of mind.
During their stay at the house, it is compulsory for them to attend weekly meetings at Alcoholics Anonymous in McLeod. While there, the participants will get help from a sponsor to help them confront their temptations, negative patterns which lead to relapse and the reasons why they have chosen to use drugs. We are working very closely with people from AA to ensure our patients remain committed, stable and drug-free.
Every weekend, we have discussions on Buddhist philosophy which are conducted by a counselor. The main aim of these discussions is to help those in recovery to see the real world through a Buddhist prospective. These discussions also help those in recovery examine and confront the reasons behind their drug addiction including any resentment they might hold towards their family and society.
- Book binding and Paper Designing Workshop
This is a new project we are implementing this year. The aim of this project is to create temporary employment for those that have left the After Care program and those that are still in After Care. Our strategy is to keep those that have recovered and are in the process of recovering away from temptation by providing them with labor intensive projects. These projects have been designed for our clients to use their creativity and produce different products that will not only generate income for them but also provide them with a skill that they can use after they no longer need our help.
This endeavor will help our clients feel empowered and regain a positive self image as well as help them to feel pride in their abilities. Our clients’ spending habits will be monitored by staff so that the funds won’t be spent to enable slide backs into drug use.
- Vocational Career skills development
Apart from assisting our clients with transitioning into a normal life, we empower them to be self-reliant by sending them to various vocational training centers in different parts of India. At these training centers, our clients learn skills that will help them after recovery. They learn how to fix cars and motorbikes, bakery work, office and computer skills, English, tailor work and many more. Each student is matched to the program according to their skills and capabilities.
